EXHIBITION // Pia Martin & Moona Saul "Peitus ja piirid"
The exhibition brings together tufting, paintings, and drawings. Though created in different techniques, the works intertwine to form a unified dialogue on the themes of sexuality and its representation.
There is so much in-your-face nudity in art, especially regarding the female body. By making it abstract, hidden, or humorous, it becomes something we can hang on our walls with more enthusiasm—bringing joy and intrigue. We are particularly interested in the "hide-and-seek" factor: when a nude is tucked away within a fun and abstract play of colors, does the viewer notice it, and how quickly? As the artists delved deeper into the subject, they arrived at the theme of safety—what is safe when we talk about sexuality and depict it?
Both Moona and Pia have experienced confusion in life regarding understanding and setting their own boundaries and those of others. Parallels can be drawn to the depiction of sexuality: if and where is it appropriate to display and exhibit it? If boundaries aren't pushed or tested, we don't grow or evolve. However, provoking too much or causing excessive discomfort often creates a mental block or even greater resistance. Experimenting with boundaries is a delicate balancing act that shouldn't be taken too seriously at a critical moment.
Boundaries set us free in art as in every aspect of life. There is a common belief that boundlessness is freedom, but in reality, it creates anxiety and uncertainty. Boundaries provide a sense of security. Yet, a picture that is too blurred can create an ambiguity that once again breeds insecurity. Where is the balance? Where is the line between the concrete and the hidden?
